Hydra Cluster Down Time for Maintenance

Dear Hydra users,

The Hydra Cluster will be shut down on Tue, Nov 6th, 2012 in order to attempt to apply I/O sub-system reconfigurations to render the system more fail-safe. As you may know, Hydra has already lost permanently seven nodes, including two of its four I/O nodes.

Previous attempts to introduce alternative I/O nodes were thwarted by un-predictable failures on the DDN 9550 storage array of this system.

We have no new hardware to use thus we will try to swap the failed nodes with other ones still functioning but of the same age as those that failed.

Due to the age of the H/W and its general failure proneness, we cannot guarantee the maximum duration of the down time, nor that the sought after results will be materialized. There is a likelihood that the power-down process which is mandatory may render more H/W components unusable.

We will make more specific announcements concerning the duration of the down time and the expected outcomes as we approach November. Please plan accordingly and let us know if you have any questions concerning this issue.
